Katarina Witt started skating when she was five. It was not long before her talents became apparent, and in Karl-Marx-Stadt she was accepted into a school specifically for kids with athletic abilities. There she saw the coach Jutta M ller. Witt made her breakthrough year in 1982 after she placed second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Then, she was winning the competition with her elegance and grace. Olympic Success at Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal in figure skating for women in a highly competitive contest. A more competitive contest afterward, she won her gold medal. Her free skate was a loss, but her gold medal resulted from her performances during both compulsory figures (short programme) as well as the mandatory figures. Witt became the women's first repeated winner of figure skating, following Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt competed at Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following her successful run as an actor. While she did not take home a single gold medal, she enchanted fans despite finishing seventh. Witt was admitted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in the year 1995.
